Homeopathy & Homeopathic Remedies

By Kavita Patel, DNM BHMS

Homeopathy is a scientific medical philosophy and practice based on the theory that the body has the ability to heal itself. Homeopathy was founded in the late 1700s in Germany by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann and since 1700 it has been widely practiced throughout the world. Homeopathic medicine showcases symptoms of illness as normal bodily responses as it attempts to achieve health. Homeopathy is based on the philosophy that "like cures like." That is, if a substance which

can be a plant, mineral, human body discharge, pathological discharge, or venom causes a symptom in a healthy person, giving the person a very small amount of the same substance may cure the illness. In theory, a homeopathic dose improves the body's normal healing and balancing processes. ‘Law of minimum dose’ is another theory of homeopathy, which means the lower the dose of the remedy, the higher the effectiveness. I have experienced in my homeopathic practice that it works very efficiently for deep rooted physical and mental ailments. Choosing the right remedy is the key to achieving success with homeopathic treatment. A homeopathic health practitioner (homeopath) uses small globules like small tapioca pearls or liquid mixtures (solutions) containing only a little active ingredient for treatment of disease. These are highly energized or ‘potentized’ remedies. These remedies can be single or a mixture of more than two different remedies. Coffee is the universal antidote for all homeopathic remedies. Anything which has a strong smell like perfume can act as an antidote for these delicate remedies. It is a good idea to stay away from highly scented body products while using homeopathic remedies. It is an excellent choice for babies and children because there are no side effects from long term use. Homeopathic medicines can be used to maintain health and treat a wide range of chronic diseases, such as allergies, eczema, psoriasis, candida infection and many other health conditions. They are also used to treat minor injuries, such as cuts and scrapes and muscle strains or sprains. Homeopathic treatment is not considered appropriate for illnesses, such as cancer, heart disease, major infections, or emergencies. Homeopathy has been widely used in India, England, the USA and other European countries. In Canada Homeopathic remedies are regulated by the Natural Product Number (NPN) of the Health Products and Food Branch of Health Canada. They are safe in most cases but some of them can have minimum side effects. You should always seek advice from your certified homeopathic practitioner. It is important to tell your medical doctor if you decide to use homeopathic remedies. Homeopathic remedies should not replace conventional treatments for serious health concerns. You can buy some homeopathic medicines at your local health food stores without a doctor's prescription. Preparations from different suppliers and practitioners may vary. You can buy a wide range of homeopathic medicines in health food stores for cold, flu, allergies, baby teething problems, prostatitis and candida infections. Arnica is a very popular homeopathic remedy for muscle and joint pain, bruises, and swelling. Calendula cream is also another known remedy for diaper rash. References: www.healthlinkbc.ca
